Electric & hybrid
You hand it over every week. It just disappears into a tank, instead of going onto something you would actually want to drive.

Grouped by what your fuel money does to the price. Keep sliding while you are down here — the bar follows you, and cars move between the groups.
Victoria's Midday Power Saver gives eligible homes up to 24 kWh free between 11am and 2pm, every day — more than a week of average driving. If you can plug in over the middle of the day, your running cost is close to nothing.
Started 1 October 2026. Victoria only, opt-in, needs a smart meter. Power used outside 11am–2pm can cost more than other plans, because retailers recover it across the rest of the day — so it suits someone who is home, or parked at a depot, in the middle of the day. If you are out from eight to six and can only charge overnight, the ordinary off-peak numbers are the ones that apply to you.
Worked on city driving — stop-start, lights, traffic. That is where almost every electric car in the country actually lives, and it is the hardest place there is on a petrol engine.
Why we publish 85% and not 88%. The figures above come to 87.6%. We round down and advertise 85%, because not every week is a city week — a run up the highway burns less petrol per kilometre and uses more power, so the saving narrows. Across the real range it lands somewhere between about 77% on an open highway and 89% in heavy traffic. We sit under the city number on purpose.
And the same rounding on hybrids. A full hybrid frees about 52–60% of a city fuel bill, because a petrol engine is at its worst in stop-start traffic and a hybrid is at its best there. We publish 45% — below even the bottom of that range, for the same reason we publish 85% rather than 87.6% on an electric car.
And we ask what you spend, not how far you drive, on purpose. The kilometres behind a fuel bill swing wildly with traffic, so asking for them invites a wrong answer. The share an electric car saves barely moves — and the worse your traffic, the better it gets, because a petrol engine's economy collapses in stop-start while an electric car's improves.
Not a fuel-savings play, and we will not pretend otherwise. Against the V8 you would otherwise be looking at, though — that comparison is honest.
